8 façade photos by William Crawford and 8 photo relief works in response by Nguyen The Son

Nguyen The Son is an accomplished international photographer known for the creation of photo relief photography, for which he won the talent prize for his master’s degree in photography at the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing, China in 2012. The Son’s work has always centered on examining the transformation of his country on the road to modernity.

For this exhibition, Nguyen The Son will create eight new photo reliefs from the current time that respond to the eight photos by William Crawford of street facades of Hanoi that were taken 20-30 years ago. This dialogue between the past and the present, between two photographers born three decades apart, one an American war generation and the other, a young Vietnamese born post-war in 1978, is a poignant examination of the past contrasted with the wonder of the astonishing transformation of this ancient city.
